Oh what fun: sledding and tobogganing

Sledding is a winter sport for the whole family and is great fun. Big or small – you are never too old to go sledding. On the sledding hills located in the countryside near our ALPS RESORTS, which we present to you today, you will be able to hurtle down the mountainside until your runners are aglow and your cheeks are a rosy red.

The world's longest floodlit sled run in the Wildkogel Arena

Starting point 2100 meters above sea level. A 14 kilometers-long, beautifully maintained sled run. One ride, 1300 vertical meters!! Taking roughly 40 minutes top to bottom. This, the world's longest floodlit sled run, has been awarded the "International Sled Run Seal of Quality in Gold". Needless to say, it is highly recommended. You should definitely give it a "test drive" of your own during your holiday spent in the Hohe Tauern National Park Holiday Region!

Your starting point is the Smaragdbahn lift in Bramberg, Salzburger Land. This is about a 20 min drive from our Tauernlodges Uttendorf or 30 minutes from the holiday apartments at Tauernsuites Mitterwirt. You can ride the lifts up to the top daily until 4:15 PM (longer on Friday), while the sled run itself remains floodlit until 10 PM. The run begins next to the mountain terminal of the Smaragdbahn and ends by the valley station. In summer, the Wildkogel excites visitors with a Slide Path.   

Just a few meters from an exclusive holiday apartment: sled run in Westendorf

Only a three-minute walk stands between you at Chalet 149 Westendorf and your sledding adventure. From your apartment there, you will just need to walk a few meters to reach the Alpenrosenbahn, where you will then ride the gondola to the starting point of the Talkaser – Schrandlhof sled run, next to the mountain lift terminal. Your ultimate destination is the Schrandlhof, from where a shuttle bus will return you to Westendorf (every 30 minutes between 1 and 5 PM, ca. 5 kilometers. Sleds can be rented from the sports shops in Westendorf.  

Night sledding in Schladming-Dachstein on the Reiteralm and Hochwurzen

If you simply can't get your fill of the snow during the daytime alone, the Schladming-Dachstein region will definitely be the right place for you. For example, the sled run on the Hochwurzen is 7 km long, floodlit during the day as well as after dark. A refreshment break enjoyed at one of the four huts there is also a must. Yet another opportunity for night owls is the sled run on the Reiteralm Hochalm. The starting point for this particular adventure is your holiday home at Alpenchalets Reiteralm. After an evening hike taking about one-and-a-half hours, you will reach the Hochalm, where you are welcome to partake in a few refreshments. From there, you will then be able to embark on a four kilometers-long floodlit ride all the way back to your cozy chalet. If you already have tired legs from your full day of skiing, you can simply order a transfer by ski-doo, allowing you to focus all your efforts on the sledding alone.  

What do you need to bear in mind when you're sledding?

In order for you to have a thoroughly enjoyable, care-free sledding experience and reach your ultimate destination safe and sound, you need to keep a few things in mind, including the following:

• Always be considerate of others and adapt your sledding to the surrounding circumstances, maintain a safe distance and never ride head-first.
• Obey warning signs and closures, never sled on the ski pistes and never obstruct the sled run itself.
• Do not sled under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Render first aid in an emergency.
• Before hitting the sled run, practice steering, braking and riding the sled.
• Use good equipment.

Your equipment should include (in addition to the sled 😉):

• A helmet. Helmets save lives! And don't forget to bring a pair of ski goggles, too.
• Good shoes with a sturdy sole providing good traction
• Warm hat and gloves, ski trousers, ski jacket
• When you are night sledding: Don't forget a headlamp!
• On longer sledding expeditions: rucksack with warm beverages and small snacks
